I found an archive of MP3’s that some kind soul made of the Top 500 Modern Rock Songs of All Time, as determined by Ohio radio station WOXY. You can review the full list on the WOXY website. The Top 10 looks like so:
1 | The Smiths | How Soon Is Now? | Meat Is Murder |
2 | Joy Division | Love Will Tear Us Apart | single |
3 | Sex Pistols | Anarchy In The UK | Never Mind The Bollocks |
4 | U2 | New Year’s Day | War |
5 | Nirvana | Smells Like Teen Spirit | Nevermind |
6 | The Ramones | I Wanna Be Sedated | Road To Ruin |
7 | Jane’s Addiction | Been Caught Stealing | Ritual De Lo Habitual |
8 | Violent Femmes | Blister In The Sun | Violent Femmes |
9 | Radiohead | Creep | Pablo Honey |
10 | The Clash | London Calling | London Calling |
It’s an OK Top 10 but I would completely pull Radiohead’s Creep (the song is not a top 10 anything) and probably remove How Soon Is Now by The Smith’s primarily since I’ve never been much of a Smith’s guy. As for the rest of the Top 500, it’s a bit strong with Grunge and bad mid-90’s alternorock and exceptionally weak on the electronic music side. For example, Headhunter by Front 242 belongs somehwere in that list.
This list has driven me to think how I could make a universally agreed upon top 500 list. I have ideas, but it requires things like programming and the involvments of thousands of people, both of which prevent me from going anywhere.
Regardless, the new flinchbot radio is going to play the top 500 for the next week. So listen in and enjoy.
